New Hobart EZ Tig 165

I just came across this new Inverter AC/DC Tig on the northern tool website.  It appears that Hobart has made their own version of the Miller Diversion 165.This unit comes with the foot pedal though!  That's about $150 extra on the Miller.  Also, it looks like Hobart has a great price on it.  $1299 (free shipping and a $100 Northern Tool Gift Card.)link to the northern page:http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...5786_200405786link to the Hobart spec sheet:http://www.hobartwelders.com/pdf/spe...Z_TIG_165i.pdfLast edited by BurningMetal; 12-06-2009 at 02:33 PM.
Replyooks like they did away with the fingertip control torch when they added the foot control. A very good idea, IMHO. I like the finger control when I'm way out of position, but you just can't beat the foot control for precision and ease of use. Didn't make sense to me to include only the fingertip control on something marketed as a beginner's machine.
Reply:The foot control is indeed a very good idea.  I have a finger control but could never get the hang of it.  Their price is a couple hundred less than the Miller too.  I wonder what the new Diversion 180 will cost, and if Hobart will have their own grey painted version of that one too.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I spoke with Miller at the PRI show, but they didn't have pricing on the new Diversion 180 ( or 185).  They did say that it will be dual voltage compatible (110V and 220V).
Reply:It looks like a big improvement over the 165 from what I saw of it in the 2010 catalog.  Has digital meters too.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:where can you download the 2010 Miller Catalog?
Reply:Go to the link below, first choice on the list is the full line catalog.  You can download the .pdf file or ask them send you a hard copy in the mail.http://www.millerwelds.com/service/lit_req.phpMM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:thanks......looks like they beef it up though.  they added 15 more amps, but the duty cycle drops way down!  10% @ 180 amps.  at 150 amps, both diversion models are at 25%.  it seemslike they just figured out a way to pump the max output up just a bit.  The biggest changes are the digital display and the mulit voltage plug.  I would hope that Miller won't jack the price up much for these small features.
Reply:I'm sure they'll ask a healthy price for the dual-voltage feature with MVP plug.  That's probly the biggest attraction of this machine.   The only other ac tig machine they have that can run both voltages is the Dynasty 200 and those are quite a big jump in price from the Diversion.  As far as the meters go, they charge about $300 for the meter option on their various machines that have meters available as an option, like my Suitcase RC feeder.  Hard to tell how much increase in price the meters cause on machines that have them included in the base price, like my 350P and XMT  cause they don't sell a version of those machines without meters to compare the price with.Yeah I noticed that about the power output, looks like they just set the upper limit higher without really beefing up the rest of the output range.  I'm guessing they probly did that just for the ability to name the machine a 180 for marketing purposes.  10% duty cycle is practically nothing.   I max out my TA185 all the time and it never complains, just keeps on welding.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Hey Guy's I know this thread is a bit old but has anyone given this machine a shot? I am intereted in getting one because of it's capability of doing aluminum.Love to here some opinions.....

Reply:I think they should have made a Hobart EZ tig 140, and have it run off of 120 volts. A machine like that I would buy in a minute.
Reply:the V205 is made in Italy

Reply:I have the Diversion 165 and it works well.  If they had the Hobart when I bought it, I would probably go with it instead.  I like the footpedal better than the finger control - although I do find I use the finger control quite a bit for the extra features it gives.  It has three modes: 1. touch to start the arc, touch again to stop the arc.   1. Continuous for tacking -  arc starts when you hold the button down, stops when you let go.   3. Same start as #1, but voltage tapers if you hold the button down on the stop.
