Goodmorning everyone!!So, as you know last winter I welded up some custom bumpers for my Silverado and I really liked how they turned out, but they had a couple problems...The first of which was the paint... I painted these in my garage one sub-zero night because I *HAD* to have them back on the truck for school the next day... And it was soooo cold that night, that the paint didnt stick to the metal, and we were having rust issues literally a few days after the paint job... At first it honestly looked cool, a few small spots of rust gave it a nice rough-looking "patina", but it got out of hand quickly and soon the entire bumpers were rusting away after just three months in Ohio...So I knew I'd have to do something about this... Our second problem was the mounting... We pretty much just threw the bumpers back on the truck while shivering, and in a hurry... The mounts do have some adjustability to them, but we weren't worried about that at the time... I decided I'd just loosen the bolts up and re-position them correctly, which of corse I never got around to :/And because of this we had some "gaps" in the front, between the bumper and the grille, and the back bumper was sitting at a strange angle... Im sure I was probably the only person to notice this, but it still bothered me...Anyway, I knew something had to be done, so I bought a few cans of truck bed liner, some paint striper, a wire wheel and some acetone and got to work...And MAN am I glad I did... I'll admit, the first paintjob and installation never would have left the shop if it had been for a customer, I would have re-done it then and there, but since it was for my truck I guess I let it go longer than I should have...I primed and truck-bed-liner'd them, and re-installed them... I also made a video about this process and answered people's most commonly-asked questions about the build later on in the video... And blew up a watermelon and shot an AR-15... That was fun, too Anyway, here's the video:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suJ3QfMUVV0[/ame]I hope you guys like it... I really wanted to follow up on the build, and share the final outcome. And for anyone interested, here's a link to the official build thread from when I made the bumpers:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=226091Have an awesome weekend, guys [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Good job Lance, and nice shooting.  A little trick I use when painting metal is to heat it up first.  You can literally see the moister in the metal coming out as the part heats up.  -Makes for a lasting paint job.  Also, POR 15 is the best for painting over rusted metal, or sand blasted metal.  Does not stick to smooth metal, but when the surface is prepared by sandblasting, or its already really rusty, this stuff sticks real good.  Its UV sensitive (only affecting the color), so hit it with Rustoleum after its almost dry and your bumpers will last a long time with NO rust.  My custom bumpers on my Jeep are 5 years old and the paint still looks great.Cheers,GarLincoln Electric, Power MIG 256Hypertherm Powermax 45 Miller Dynasty 280DXSmith O/A torchGenesis of a welding table

Reply:I've always enjoyed your informative videos but never realized until I saw the 57 on your truck plate that you are just two counties South of me.  Not sure if you come up here in July for the Country Concert, but I'm just down the road from that.JackJackFort Loramie, OhioMilermatic Autoset 180
ReplyOR 15 is great stuff. Its a little on the pricey side but it does work good a little goes a long way and make sure you were gloves cause the stuff will be on your skin for about a month.
Reply:That rust you had on that bumper was a perfect base for POR-15!Nice job anyhow on the new paint job.
Reply:I have also had really good luck with Chassis Saver...from what I can tell same basic idea as POR 15, but a little cheaper.
Replyanse,You need a sandblaster. would have made quick work of the paint and rust on those bumpers. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:What about ospho/phospho?  Works well here in Fl on rusted up stuff but we don't have salt obviously.
Reply:Now you just need a real truck to put them on!!   Preferably one from a company that is not owned by uncle Sam!Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
