I'm D1.1 certified in mig and stick 1G 2G 3G 4G 3F 4F and have 4 years of experience and training.  I have a lot of experience working in shops fabricating heavy equipment from the ground up and I've done a lot of layout, fabrication, welding and machining.  I also have built leak testable parts, parts that are used at pressure, and structural steel.  I love my job, but I am ready to have an adventure and would love to work in the wilderness.Before I sell all of my worldly possessions and put it into a welding truck [ I already have a ranger 305 and a suv, although i doubt these will pass as a welding rig, i hear the ranger 305 wouldn't even be allowed on a pipeline jobsite] i wish i could find someone to talk to and ask questions.  I worked with a guy who was a pipeliner in Russia, he taught me a lot about flux core welding and heavy duty fab even though he doesn't speak English and I don't speak Russian.  But from what I understood, he said I should go weld pipeline if the money is as good as everyone on the internet says it is.Any pipeliners on here want to give me some pointers, I cant find much information googling, but am basically ready to swap my suv for a pickup, throw my ranger in the back and try to find an pipeline construction company in north dakota or wyoming, I can weld vertica and over head with 6010 8018 all day long.  What's the deal?
Reply:My advice to you is leave your Ranger 305 at home and go get a job helping . Everybody wants to throw a welder in the back of a truck and think that they are going to be a pipeliner . Let me ask you a question have you ever taken a 12 on 12 branch test before ? How long did it take you to get proficient at what you are doing now ? It takes a while to learn how to downhand good enough to pipeline . Laying out in the snow and cold and excessive heat trying to weld the pipe as its moving around because the front end of the pipegang thinks its easier to fusion weld the pipe together than arc weld it . You might want to look at oilrig welding or rig chasing as they call it . Good luck though

Reply:I agree with the others; pipeline welding is a lot different than fab shop! As for the 305? When I built my first rig I naturally ran a Red Face, and was told by many bosses that no garden tractors would be allowed!(Rangers etc) Now 20yrs. Later and the shoe is on the other foot,I still run the big Lincoln(300D) but have many 305's workin for me on the Mainline. All our pipe is 18"-48" and lots .500 wall. We also sleeve corrosion and run 3/16 and 1/4" 7018 all day with those 305's. Lots of the old boys up here are slowly converting. I still like my 3D . Don't get down just do some down hand (maybe a down hand course)  do some bend tests on them or have some x-rayed.Last edited by off-road man; 02-09-2012 at 12:44 PM.
